This is a record of my first career from September 1990 to August 2019.

Twenty nine years probably seems quite short to most, although I felt it quite long and varied. Since I want to spend my fifties allocating time how I choose, it simply wasn’t realistic to have a standard 40 year career. Instead, I see my current activities as my second thirty year career (since I hope to still be doing at least some of these things into my eighties).

At this point, this post is for historical context only. I very much hope to never need to compile a CV in the future. When I complete my annual reflections in my diary, this post will make a useful cross reference.

This was also my LinkedIn profile, but since I have decided to mostly freeze that account going forward, this post should be considered the authoritative source from now on.

    Key achievement was to forge a closer relationship between products and the sales/account team, resulting in some new product roadmaps on the back of customer demand. Also introduced a comprehensive product catalogue to assist with the salesforce pipeline tracking and quarterly sales targets.

    I was the interim CTO at the start of the O2 wifi initiative, a new business unit inside O2. A small cross functional team was established to work on the end to end proposition.

    I was involved in architecture, technology selection, team recruitment (including the permanent CTO) and developing the core user journeys in conjunction with the marketing teams. The main technical delivery was a working prototype of the proposition which was implemented using open source components. Personally developed the Django web elements. Supervised the router prototyping.

    Successfully handed over a plan, team and initial designs to the new CTO after around six months. This allowed the full development to commence based on the working prototypes.

    After the handover, I joined the IT strategy team inside O2 to construct a strategy for web enabling existing IT platforms. This revolved around the customer identity and the new Telefonica developer platform Blue Via, and the oauth and openid technologies.

    Giffgaff is a people-powered mobile phone service in the UK using the MVNO model. I joined at a time when there was little more than a CEO and a set of slides. Eight months later the full service was launched.

    Key responsibilities were the enterprise architecture, technology selection, vendor selection and leading the various delivery workstreams overall. Also recruited the permanent technical team to run the service in-life.

    A number of innovative uses of technology were put in place to meet the low-cost model that the business operates under. This included Software as a Service, Managed Services and hosted Services.

    I managed the Service Delivery department on an interim basis whilst the permanent head was recruited following a re-organisation. The Service Delivery department is responsible for delivering services, applications and systems into the operational environment that meet the needs of various Meteor business units including Marketing, Sales and retail. In addition, various technology, capacity and system upgrades are required to keep the estate up to date.

    The Service delivery department includes MSC, packet core, voicemail, messaging, national transmission, IP network, CRM, Billing and IVR/Customer care platforms.

    Key achievements during this assignment are:
    – supported the 3G rollout programme by setting up a core network workstream to consolidate activities and budget in one place
    – introduced a managed service, off-shore IT delivery and support model
    – negotiated a significant packet data infrastructure deal to support the mobile broadband propositions.

      • Responsible for defining and implementing strategies to manage the relationships with the largest technology suppliers to the Orange mobile and broadband networks. These suppliers cover all aspects of a complex mobile and fixed environment including network, IT, web and managed services.

        Also responsible for the annual technical Maintenance and Support budget including budgeting, purchase, consolidation efficiencies and meeting finance challenges.

        Key achievements to date are:

        – Managed the introduction of strategies for Off-shore Managed IT services, Out-sourced field force and Microwave Transmission equipment repair
        – Negotiated a major license maintenance renewal with IBM within budget and compliant with strategic objectives.
        – Established formal governance for top 20 vendors including regular account review meetings and quarterly exec briefings.
        – Delivering the maintenance budget well within target.
      • Head of Network Services

        • Managed a team of around 100 people responsible for all aspects of the core mobile network including switching, services, messaging, call centres and Web portal infrastructure.

          Main achievements were the delivery of significant infrastructure for the Magic Numbers service on time and within budget; the vendor and technical strategy for the packet data transport network; the introduction of an off shore partner for the support of the in-house HLR and the beginnings of a consolidation in this area.

          Participated closely in a major re-organisation of the entire technical directorate. Work stream leader for the Core Network re-organisation and contributor to the IT and Technology streams.•
        • Domain Manager – Service Design

          • Managed a large team (around 25) responsible for IN systems, provisioning, HLR, bespoke core platforms such as Service Broker, SLR, prepaid, Location based services and End to End Service Integration.

            During this period introduced two off-shore vendors into the network services arena. These were for provisioning and service activation. The contracts were established on a fixed-price, milestone basis with ongoing, SLA oriented support agreements.•
        • Service Creation team manager

          • Selected, procured and implemented a generic Telcordia IN SCP system in the network. This became the platform for the rapid implementation of around 15 new services into the network.

            Took over management of the network provisioning team and began to reshape the internal structure, splitting off testing and operational support from the development team. Introduced project and resource planning to make the team’s activities more transparent.

            Also during this period worked very closely with France Telecom and other Orange Group country operators to establish the sharing of knowledge, platforms and products between entities. Workstream leader in the first two initiatives to produce shared working across entities before the centralised structures were implemented (VCFs and CoEs).•

            • Principal Engineer and Team leader for the prepaid service design team.
              Designed the (believed to be) world’s first IN prepaid implementation and extended the functionality many times to bring prepaid functionality up to the level of postpaid.

              System still in use today. Designed and delivered innovative solutions for real-time roaming and SMS charging.

    Worked on-site with Orange PCS on the design and implementation of an Answer Fax system to be integrated with the Unisys Voicemail system already present.
    Worked on-site with a major client, Natwest Life on the implementation of a communications system to connect the sales field force with the banks back office systems. First role on-site was the test management of the system, followed by requirements capture and analysis for change requests to the system.

    Trainee Actuary responsible for supporting partners on actuarial matters for pension fund clients. This included scheme valuations, mergers and regulatory advice.
